20190628 – Day 3 – To my first campground

Got moving early again feeling pretty tired and sore still from yesterday.  Using Google maps today to get to my destination as it’s a bit off route, and also going to skip part of the route that goes by Lake Anna, even though I might be missing some good dam views.  I could have camped there, but it’s actually more expensive and not as far along as where I ended up, small country campground, near Louisa, Virginia.

Another first for me today was getting chased by my first dog.  It oddly kinda helped me out as I was feeling like I didn’t have much gas left in my tank.  Turns out that I actually still had plenty of energy to get moving quite quickly.  That felt good to find out, you know, after.  I think though, also, I could have gotten the dog to back down.  I’ve been chased by dogs before, and usually, I turn into them and they almost always turn tail and run.  I’ve only ever encountered one dog before who saw me come at him and didn’t back down.  Thankfully, that time, the owner called him off.  Anyway, I should probably carry some mace just in case.  I love dogs, but not when they chase cyclists on a public road.

Pardon me while I whinge for a bit; I’m not a huge fan of tent camping at campgrounds.  It’s not that much cheaper than a budget motel; the state park charges $48 for non-residents, and I’m paying $40 per night here.  There’s no aircon, and not much privacy.  It’s noisy because dogs and kids bark during the day, and drunk idiots laugh and carry on till the wee hours of the night quite nearby.  I’m glad all these people are having fun, but it’s just not my scene.  Rant over

I’ll be here for two nights as there was a two night minimum to book here, and I needed a day off the bike anyway.
